My students need an option for how they sit/stand to learn. While I work, I like to stand, sit in a chair, sit on a stool, or sit on the floor. It depends on my mood!
My class is an awesome mix of personalities and preferences. They work hard and, although facing many challenges at home, choose to work hard and be successful at school. We are a Title I school, with most of our students on free/reduced lunch. They don't have many options about the way their home is, nor do they have a say in the neighborhoods they grow up in.
My students may not have a welcome environment every day when they go home, but I want them to have a warm place to come every day at school.
The students love to have choices. The choices I would love to give them are where they learn each day. They love to have options of how they learn and the people they work with.
My Project
My students deserve a say in their environment. When I work, I enjoy having the option of where I sit depending on how I feel at that time. My students need options too.
Whether it's on a cushion at a low table, at a standing height or on a stool, at a bench and table, or a regular desk, my students should have an option in their learning environment.
I would love to give my students the chance to sit at a picnic table with 3 classmates to work on a large project. Some students just enjoy sitting on the floor and working independently, so the lap tables would be perfect with their work space. The low table and cushions would be great for the students who love to sit cross legged and work leaning over a table.
There are a few options that are higher also. There are stools or tables to stand at to work. The lower stools fit great under a kidney table to work with a teacher or small group.
