Dr. Seuss said it best in his quote "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." My students need an inviting library center to help build their interest in literature and reading.
I teach full day Kindergarten in a high poverty school in rural Oklahoma.
Kindergarten marks a year filled with many educational milestones. We devote a lot of our time to building a foundation for literacy. This includes the understanding that letters make sounds, sounds make words, words make sentences, and sentences provide information. My students leave Kindergarten as emergent readers of various degrees.
My Project
The furniture and magnetic language center will help enhance our class library and provide a cozy and inviting space for my students to build a foundation for literacy and learning through printed materials. My students can learn so much by simply visiting our class library, including: concepts of print, building imagination, exploring new places, and genre. They begin establishing the difference in real and make believe and fact and fiction at the library center. Their inquisitive nature becomes apparent as we read books together. The questions that my students pose after reading books often lead to detailed study regarding the topics that interest them. As the school year progresses, many of my students begin putting their newly learned skills to practice in the library center and they begin reading to other students and to me. Without a doubt, the library center is an exciting place that is filled with endless possibilities in regards to building a literate foundation.
My students would love a cozy place to sit and explore their growing desire to read and enjoy books.
Currently, they sit on the floor on pillows and worn out bean bags. Please consider donating to this project and giving my students new furniture and materials that will create an inviting space for language development and reading for years to come.
