Mrs. Spane from Coronado CA is requesting Reading Nooks, Desks & Storage through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students who sit in the back of the room, a better view of the instruction going on in the front of the room. Also, these high desks help students with LOTS of energy, focus!
There are so many things that make my students special, and why I love them? I hardly know where to start! Okay, how about the first question: What makes my students special? I work at a school where 80% of the students have active duty military parents (one parent or both parents). Parents, who leave for deployments, working away from home, challenging the consistency of their home-life. So, my students are super special, because they are often parented by single parents, while one is away serving this country's armed forces.
My students' parents are also super special, because they are often single parenting, while their spouse is deployed.
These special families move across the United States, from coast to coast, several times in their young lives. To my students, being the new student is a very familiar situation. Getting to know another new state, city, community, school, and classroom is a situation my students, and their dedicated parents, are used to. As their teacher, I work hard to create a consistent, emotionally secure, engaging environment, so my students and their parents can acclimate quickly, and learn!
I teach in a large classroom. I love the space, but students sitting in the back of the room tend to tune out during instruction more frequently than students sitting in the middle or the front of the room. I find, this is because they sit farther from the board, in a regular height desk. Sitting at the back of the room with these high desks, students will be able to see the projection on the front board easier, which will help their attention to instruction. Sitting up higher at the back of the classroom will also increase student participation, both with the whole class as well as with their smaller table groups.
Another important reason these high desks will help my students learn, is due to the fact that many students have lots of energy, and can either stand while working or sit on a high stool, while working.
This being my 17th year teaching elementary school, I am seeing more and more students with attention challenges and lots of physical energy and fidgeting. Therefore, having a few high standing desks in the back row of my classroom will provide flexible seating options for students with lots of energy, while encouraging greater instructional attention and partcipation.
