What if you could use what you sit on as a learning tool? That is precisely the opportunity I would like to give my students with these wonderful phonics carpet squares.
My students are learning English as a second language.
They are high poverty students who are just learning their letters, sounds and basic words in English. Most are immigrants or children of immigrants, that are eagerly learning English as they attend their local elementary school, a Title I school, for the first time.
I am requesting a set of Phonics carpet squares that will not only fit in my small classroom but will also help students recognize and remember their letters and sounds. Unlike conventional large classroom rugs these 1 ft squares give each student their own seating area that can be used in multiple areas in the classroom. There is a different letter of the alphabet on each square, and a cute image that starts with the same phonetic sound. I believe this will enable my students to make connections between their letters and sounds because they are using and viewing the letters constantly.
I believe that my students will benefit greatly from having constant exposure to the alphabet and these carpet squares is one more way for me to reach them.
By giving my students this learning tool I can not only teach them when I am in front of them, but also when they are working independently. Let's not forget that it would give them a comfortable place to sit as they learn!
