Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I conduct home visits for my students. In doing this I establish a personal connection with each child. I witness their home life and interactions among their family. I see that they come from families that are riddled with inter-generational economic challenges, language barriers, and a variety of immigrant stresses and legal issues. Collectively, my students are the embodiment of the kind of human goodness that is born from long standing family struggles that are managed with sincerity and optimism.
Their families understand and prioritize the value of their children's education.
My students are responsible beyond their years. They look for ways to be of service and are respectful of the school environment and its authorities. Generally they arrive at school punctually -ready to learn, to the point that 95% of my class received "Perfect Attendance" for the entirety of the 2016-17 school year!
After a unit study of American historical figures, a student of Mexican descent told everyone during morning circle that he wants to be Martin Luther King Jr. when he grows up. His sentiments were echoed by his peers. My scholars need your support to thrive as they grow into model citizens.
My Project
It is so important that we have a nice rug for our class library. Students are naturally drawn there, but, because of the cold hard floors, they won't stay for a long enough while to enjoy a book or two.
I want to ensure that the classroom library offers a cozy, warm and inviting floor for book enjoyment.
Students complain that the floor is too hard or too cold and they end up sitting at their student desk for their reading. I am concerned that my belly readers and those who prefer to read while in crisscross applesauce don't get the chance to dive deep into the pages of their selected book.
I imagine that with the addition of this classroom rug, I will have a room filled with readers that have options for how and where they will enjoy their books. I look forward to them being able to prolong their reading activities by supplementing their books with a nice and cozy rug area.
