I teach first grade in an amazing school filled with a high number of diverse learners. Students in my class come from unique cultural and language backgrounds as well as varying levels of physical, social/emotional, and academic needs.
Did you ever think that the chair you sit on could impact your learning?
My students are an energetic group of first graders who have a deep love of learning. But when it comes time to sit down and show what they know, the chairs are a distraction from them showing their absolute best. These students have amazing focus and determination and soak up everything thrown at them. Unfortunately, however, accidents happen and the chairs have been soaking up those accidents over the years. It's time for them to have chairs to sit on that are fresh and clean.
The chairs that are currently in my classroom may be from when the school was originally built. They are old and dirty and nothing gets them totally clean. We are long overdue for fresh and clean new chairs that suit the size of the students and the needs of the classroom space. These are the first steps as I create a space with flexible seating.
New, properly sized chairs will positively impact attention, concentration, memory and ultimately academic achievement.
They will also physically support proper posture, blood circulation, and neck and back muscle relaxation. The impact these chairs will have on both their physical and academic growth is not just important, it's essential.
