This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title I preschool where all of the students qualify for and receive free/reduced lunch. The Child Development Center at ARA gives underprivileged 4 year old students the wonderful opportunity to be engaged in a school setting before entering kindergarten. My classroom is a 4 year old Montessori classroom. All Montessori classrooms focus on the whole child approach, the prepared environment for the student, use of Montessori materials, and the teacher as the facilitator of learning.
My Project
The sensory cushions will provide comfortable seating and vestibular stimulation for my students. These cushions will improve posture and strengthen their core and back muscles. They will also allow the students to be actively engaged by bouncing, rocking, or swaying. Movement increases blood flow, blood flow sends oxygen to the brain, and oxygen in the brain improves focus and knowledge retention. Four year olds are physically unable to sit still for extended periods of time, so the cushions will allow for vestibular stimulation. Movement will give their muscles the stimulus they need in order for them to develop physically as children should.
