I want to get rural students to use big city technology to prepare them for college and beyond. Few of their parents have attended college and many will be the first in their family to graduate from high school, so going on to college is a big deal.
I found this great online project called the Clean Watershed Project where schools across the nation go out to their local watershed, test the water, use a GPS unit to record their coordinates, then use Google Earth to post the data and see what the other schools have found in their areas.
Many of these students don't have Internet in their homes and because we are so rural, if they have Internet, it is dial-up. My students need opportunities to experience hands-on use of technology in their classrooms, so they will be able to compete with their peers when they get to college.
My Project
In order to participate in the Clean Watershed Project, we need the minimum of one quality handheld GPS unit that can collect and record our location and we need a water testing kit to test the water. The Environmental Testing kit will let us test more than just the water, it includes many types of testing to allow the students a wide variety of environmental tests. The technology used for this project will better prepare the students for college where they will be using the latest technology.
Your support will make it possible for my students to participate in a project that will broaden their horizons to see what is beyond their own small community and allow them to experience a larger community with the same goals of improving the world around them.
