My Students

The students at SVAH live in the heart of L.A., and carry with them dreams of getting to college so that they may give back to their communities. They are bright, motivated young people who have dreams that we work hard to help them realize. However, they and we are limited by a lack of resources.

With high dropout rates in the community, our students are working to create a new narrative of success and transform their school and community through educational empowerment.

Many are specializing in art, a main focus of our school, and I truly feel as though these novels will help creatively enrich the lives of our students and help them build needed critical thinking skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

My Project

I plan to use the novels Three Cups of Tea and Enrique's Journey. Three Cups of Tea is a study of the ability of one person to make a difference, and on the power of education to change a community and perhaps the world. Enrique's Journey is a novel that I would like to use in a unit on Globalization and what it means to be a Global Citizen. Throughout the unit, students will develop their ability to think and evaluate critically, and to also to respect other people's values and attitudes. We will read Enrique's Journey along with other literary and expository excerpts and articles that examine our interconnectedness across the globe.

Our students need access to a variety of writers and literature, to not only broaden their perspectives but also improve their English skills.

The novels I am hoping to teach would expose my students to literature that will help them realize their goals, and inspire them to be successful in their pursuits. Thank you for your consideration. I truly believe that both novels will help students build academic literacy skills, as well as inspire them to reach their goals.
