Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a first year Kindergarten teacher in a brand new school in Chicago's West Englewood neighborhood. I have had an amazing year with my energetic students, and I look forward to sending them to first grade armed with knowledge and eager to learn. I have noticed during the past few weeks that as the weather gets nicer and summer approaches, my students' ability to focus is decreasing. The Big Books and CDs that I am requesting will help me capture my students' energetic imaginations during the upcoming months. With the help of the Big Book storage unit, the books will be easily accessible to my students for use during center and choice time. Throughout the year, I have realized that my students learn best through active participation in the reading process. They love rereading familiar, rhythmic texts such as "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do You See?" and "Peanut Butter and Jelly." I believe that this collection of Big Books and CDs will not only captivate my students' imaginations, but will also help build their reading comprehension and fluency skills as they transition to first grade.
