Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love science and the outdoors. They want to explore, investigate, experiment and invent, but they lack the financial resources at home and at school that provide beyond the basics.
Engaging experiences that are relevant and resources are what my students need to gain opportunities that will make them successful in and out of school.
My students and their families want them to do well in school, they just need opportunities. Help my students become future biologists, geologists, engineers, agriculturalists or whatever careers that interest them.
My diverse students are multilingual -- English, Spanish, Mam, Qanjobal -- and most come from working-class families. Many live with single parents, guardians, grandparents or in multi-household families. Regardless of their situation, their families say they want their kids to do well in school and beyond.
My Project
This spring, my students will wrap up their science inquiries by celebrating their natural environment. As part of this celebration, I have invited Billy B. to perform for my students.
Billy B is an environmental educator who uses music, dance and performance to educate youth on environmental concepts such as interconnectedness, sustainability and personal responsibility at the local and global level.
Billy B. will perform songs from his album, The Salish Sea, which includes songs such as The Orca, Salmon Run and Kelp Forest. I will be playing these songs to my students earlier in the year and will provide lyrics for them so that they can be familiar with the tune as they dance, move and sing in this kinetic and interactive learning opportunity. I also plan on inviting families to this exciting event.
