Our school is a Title I campus, serving approximately 520 incredible, creative, enthusiastic learners! We have a high poverty percentage, with 100% of our students receiving free/reduced price lunches. Many of our students depend on us to be a haven of safety, consistency, and a place of supportive and stable adults; traits many of them do not experience in their home lives.
Despite these challenges, our students persevere in their innovation and creativity, not letting boundaries stop them.
Our school strives to provide a supportive, engaging environment where students can reach their maximum potential. It celebrates abilities and believes in the possibilities of students. My classroom is a place that celebrates this diversity and explores our world through music, dance, and play!
My Project
These mp3 players have so many roles to fulfill in our classroom! I love using storybooks in my music room. Sometimes we sing a capella, sometimes we read it, and sometimes I simply turn the pages and let a recording serenade us as we gaze upon beautifully illustrated pictures of the lyrics. It is incredibly touching to watch a child's reaction to these pieces and get lost in the message of the music. A beloved center is our story corner and I've collected many illustrated lyric books but these books have yet to reach their potential.
Being able to choose a book and listen to it being sung to you would engage my students on a whole new level.
Many of my students struggle with regulating behaviors. Having access to these mp3 players to listen to calming music will help them deescalate and facilitate joining the whole class again for more music making. I can also upload songs we use in performance for students to have extra exposure to and learn in a more authentic way than reading along with lyrics from a screen.
I can't wait to offer my students a new way to engage with literacy through music!
