My students need a portable sound system that can fill a classroom with enough sound so that they can sing and perform to recorded accompaniments on CDs, flash drives, and other electronic storage devices.
I teach over 800 students every week. We have a very diverse population; approximately one-third are white, one-third are African-American, and one-third are Asian. Many students are learning English as a second language; over 28 languages are spoken here at our school. Approximately 40% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. We are a Title I school.
We have many opportunities for our students to perform and make music; we have 4th and 5th grade chorus, a band program, and a string program.
We also have a very unique program here at our school, called Project M.U.S.I.C. (Music Uniting Students Inspiring Communities). We collaborate with music majors from the local University to produce and stage a musical every year. Every 4th and 5th grade student participates in the program, and we stage the opera both here and again on the University campus. This production includes costumes, makeup, props, stage set and lighting.
My Project
At our school we have two full time teachers on a cart--that is, we travel from classroom to classroom, and we must bring all of our equipment with us. We need a portable music system that can fit on a cart, and at the same time produce enough power and volume to fill a classroom with sound. We do not have the luxury of carrying many pieces of equipment, so most of our recorded accompaniments for singing and playing are stored on flash drives or an iPod. We need a product that will play back music on CDs and other electronic formats.
This sound system will help inspire my students to project their singing voices strongly with confidence, demonstrating the expressive qualities of singing, that is, with good tone quality, pitch matching, diction, and facial expression.
