Simple Woodshop Games

Help me give my students an opportunity to start working in the woodshop with Unfinished Wooden Blocks and Marbles and that are used to create wooden games that are quick and fun for the students.

My Students

Manufacturing and Exploring Technology are the two Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes I teach to 7th and 8th grade students. These CTE classes consist of both boys and girls who are interested in taking a class with their friends and having fun at the same time. Although students enjoy using the power tools to make something out of wood, they are learning skills that can benefit them beyond the classroom and for some the exposure gives them another idea of careers in the technical field.

Much of the learning in CTE classes comes when students can put their hands on the machines and materials as they create their projects.

Covid-19 has impacted each student by limiting their amount of time they are in the woodshop and being near their friends as they learn from one another. Watching videos of people in the woodshop isn’t as impactful as watching their friends do it and then working together as they use power tools to complete their projects.

My Project

The wooden blocks and glass marbles will be used by the students as they build games in the woodshop. The cost of wood and other supplies needed to make these games have gone up so much during Covid-19 that they cannot make as many games and projects that they normally would. By having the wood already cut to size, and finished, the students are able to save time in the shop and quickly build the game projects. Then, they can add a protective stain on the wood to finish it.

My woodworking students love making these personal games that they play with their friends and family or they can give away a games as a gift.

Some of these games have even been donated to the school to be used by other students during lunch recess or given to administrators and teachers as a sign of appreciation. As my students learn how to use these woodshop tools safely and make these games, they are learning life long skills, building self-confidence and creating healthy relationships with their peers by working together with a common goal.
