This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a low income inner city school where 90% of our student body is on free or reduced lunch. My students depend on school for breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner. School is a safe place for many of our students and a place of consistency. Our classroom is our second home. We love and respect each other. Kindness and always trying our personal best are our most important rules, and I see them go above and beyond these "rules" every day.

I have a classroom full of students who are kind and respectful and although they don't have much, they have a whole lot to give; I learn from THEM every day.

My students are generous, loving, hardworking and grateful.

I have many English language learners. I have students from Guatemala, Kenya, South Sudan, Mexico, and Spain. I have students who have been in the United States less than 2 years who not only are learning the typical fourth-grade material but are learning new customs, a new language and a new way of life. Our diverse classroom is what makes us special, we have so many things we learn from each other and so many things to share.

My Project

Each year I spend my own money on school supplies that my students will need to succeed throughout the school year. My students need these supplies not for one project, but for everything they do in class. They'll use them every day for reading, writing, math, social studies & science. Supplies as simple as paper and pencils. Although supplies such as these seem small, they add up quickly, especially with 24 students in my classroom.

My students worry about things like where their next meal is going to come from; providing school supplies for them gives them one less thing they have to worry about.

We need glue, paper, pencils, notebooks, hand sanitizer, Kleenex, crayons, colored pencils, folders, highlighters, dry erase markers & erasers etc. Supplies that I used to get excited about when my parents took me back to school shopping. Many of my students don't get to experience that. Seeing their faces light up when they see their new supplies at the beginning of the school year is priceless. Worrying about whether or not they have something to write with or notebooks to keep their work in is one obstacle I can help solve.

My students overcome so many obstacles in order to be successful in the classroom, & no matter what they've gone through, they are the most hardworking, grateful, smart young people I've ever met. They just need a little help, a good teacher & the right supplies. We as adults could learn some things from them.
