Hooray! This project is fully funded

I teach all major subjects in a third- and fourth-grade combined class at a highly diverse progressive school in the East Village of New York City. Approximately 68 percent of the students receive free lunch as well as a number of other social services and spend the majority of their time within their neighborhoods. Our school is committed to contributing to the community and to developing our students' understanding of the experiences of others as well as their responsibility as members of society. This year, my class's explorations in the area of science have had to rely heavily on supplies that my students or I find in our own homes. Despite this lack of reusable and necessary resources, my students have thoroughly enjoyed discovering what water does when poured on top of cotton balls, aluminum foil, saran wrap, wax paper, and a variety of other materials. I've also found that their ability to truly understand and then retain scientific information increases greatly when they can literally get their hands wet. For this reason, when designing my science curriculum, I seek out as many hands-on learning experiences as I can. I also take into consideration the New York City and State Learning Standards as well as my own goals for the skills and knowledge I want my students to master. The fifth learning standard asks that students be able to "describe the effects of common forces (pushes and pulls)." Given all of this information, I have planned to engage my students in an exploration of simple machines--levers, pulleys, gears, wheels, axels, and inclined planes. During this study, students will learn about how these machines have been used throughout history and are still used today, as well as the characteristics of simple machines and the how forces cause change and gravity affects motion. I know that in order to make this investigation real and meaningful (as well as fun) for my students, I will need to provide them with the materials to engage in hands-on building and experiments. Four sets of Simple Machines Discovery Kits will provide enough materials for each of the twenty-one students in my class to use simple machines to create larger machines and models. As the kits are durable, these materials will also be available to future classes so they too can use their own hands to understand simple machines and forces.
