Mrs. Zakem from Las Vegas NV is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need hands-on experimentation with simple machines so we can enter the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest and apply our engineering skills in real world situations.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students come to me with great ideas, solutions to problems they see around their community, and I want to help them accomplish their goals. The school is part of a very large district but our school is a home and great community. The fact that we are a Title I school where 90% receive free and reduced lunch doesn't deter their determination. They don't want to be seen as less fortunate. They want to work hard and reach their goals. They walk into my room ready for any challenge I give them. They work together and make sure no one is falling behind. They are my inspiration and I can't wait to get to school to be with them.
I want to enter my students into the National Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. They first need to explore simple machines and how they work. I want to allow them time to work with these hands-on materials so when they enter the contest they can use their knowledge, creativity, and hard work to build the most complex Rube Goldberg machines their minds can fathom.
By exploring the simple machines , they can then build more and find how these machines improve their everyday lives.
By seeing engineering as a problem solving tool we will then use this as a catalyst to exploring other problems my students want to tackle in their community.
The Nasco science materials that will be supplied from this project are hands-on simulations of real world ways simple machines are used to help make our lives easier. I want my students to explore how these machines can solve everyday problems both easily and in a complex way so that they will apply this knowledge to the Rube Goldberg Contest I want to enter them into. Without having these experiences first my students would not be able to tackle a complex, group project like this nationally recognized contest.
