Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the logos for Green Lantern, Apple Computers, and McDonald's? All of these symbols are tied into advertising. Students will have an opportunity to create their own symbols that will be silk screened on tee shirts during the Persuasion unit in English.
My students are sixth graders who come from all different cultures and experiences.
They like learning and being engaged in different projects that help reinforce what they have learned. They attend a middle school in the middle of a residential community in California.
My students get to school by bus, rides from their parents, or by walking. The school is surrounded by trees which is great for the students who live in a more urban environment. My students range from those who are socially disadvantaged to those that are not.
My Project
The Silk Screening Kits and ink will allow my students to create a hands-on project that reinforces their skills not only for persuasive writing, but also for symbolism and the creation of a logo.
Persuasion, advertising, and marketing go hand in hand, but how do you explain these concepts to sixth graders? The students will be able to use symbolism in creating a logo for a product or an idea in their English classes.
This type of activity requires out-of-the-box thinking as students will discover from first hand experience how to create a prototype of a future product and also design a logo that can be silk screened onto tee shirts to go with it. The students will also be involved in a cooperative learning experience which will allow them to work and learn with others as they complete the project.
The "Silk Screening Symbolism" project is extremely important because not only does the activity cover standards-based instruction, but it also ensures that the students are using their critical thinking skills to develop a product and logo.
This project offers students a hands-on approach to learning about persuasion.
