"It's too loud!", "I can't do it!", meltdowns, and silence - these are all phrases and things in which I wish to reduce for my students. For my students, a pin drop sounds like a loud crash and a schedule change feels like an explosion. Help me reduce anxiety during school day for my students.
I currently work with children in a K-12 public school who have anxiety-related, sensory-related, and social disorders including, but not limited to autism, anxiety, selective mutism, language/auditory processing, sensory processing, ADHD, and traumatic brain injury.
These students have difficulty understanding and processing complex auditory paragraphs and directions, taking tests, transitioning between classes, dealing with change in the day, social skills, and more.
A visual schedule and visual timer will reduce anxiety for my students related to time and transitions. Instead of becoming upset and confused about what is happening next or how much time is left for a task, they will be able to quickly glance at their timer or schedule and move on. The Selective Mutism Resource Manual will assist in educating staff, as well as myself, about this rare communication disorder and help my student increase expressive language during the school day. Finally, the remainder resources will allow my students to realize that everyone has different needs and it is okay to take a break to calm down. My students will learn how to manage difficult situations and tasks that make them feel anxious which will create a more positive learning experience for them.
Help me hear the phrases "I want to come to school" and "I feel safe", in addition to many more, come out of my students mouths.
Help me reduce anxiety related to transitions, social skills, and tasks for these students. Once feelings of anxiety are reduced, learning is more meaningful and easier for these students. Help me create a positive, safe, calm learning environment for my students.
