Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at Hillcrest face a variety of social and economic struggles every day. Currently, 80% of students receive free and reduced lunches and many families are in need of further resources to help their families thrive. A large proportion of families identify as low income and reach out to the school to assist with accessing community resources such as food, clothing, transportation and medical care.
At Hillcrest, we teach a wide variety of learners.
Some of these students are apart of our Significant Support Needs (SSN) classroom. Children in SSN are students with significant support needs and are highly diverse learners. Some of these students have extensive needs in the areas of cognition and/or learning, communication, movement and social/emotional abilities. Our students are capable of incredible things. In order to help them reach their potential, we have a variety of exciting programs centred around developing their academic and social skills in unique and fun ways.
My Project
At Hillcrest, we believe learning should be fun, exciting and innovative. Therefore, students who are apart of our Significant Support Needs (SSN) classroom take part in a school-wide program called the "Treat Cart". The Treat Cart is a mobile store that sells a variety of snacks and beverages to the school staff. The best part is that our SSN students run it!
The Treat Cart allows students to practice their communication and social skills to school staff, all while learning essential math and literacy skills.
The Treat Cart is the highlight of the day for many of our SSN students. They get to engage with teachers, practice their social skills with friends and customers, and learn essential life skills that will help them be successful in and out of the classroom!
Materials for this project will go towards stocking the treat cart, so students can sell the snacks to school staff, all while developing essential life skills. The best part is all profits from the treat cart go directly back to the students. Last year, the profits allowed for a special field trip to a dance studio, where the kids got to develop their motor skills while busting a dance move!
