My Students
I have three kindergarten and five first grade students in a self-contained special education classroom for students who receive instruction in the adapted curriculum. The program is called Adapted Academic Foundations and is targeted for students who have been found eligible for specially designed instruction due to an intellectual disability or another related disability.
We use a variety of assistive technology and sign language instruction to help our students build a functional communication system.
These skills are essential to interact with others.
My Project
My students need communication supports, including instruction on American Sign Language, to provide examples of vocabulary and language skills to communicate with peers and adults.
My students will be able to learn vocabulary and signs that will help them express their thoughts and ideas.
In addition, American Sign Language can be used throughout their daily lives, especially with their families and when they are out in the community. This is a vital component of their functional life skills instruction and helps to individualize their learning.
The Signing Time videos provide the children with an engaging and exciting format to learn and reinforce concepts which leads to increased retention of learning. They are highly motivated to participate!
