Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello! I am a first grade inner city Chicago public school teacher. Last year, I had a wonderful student in my class who had special needs. He could not verbally communicate with anyone. So, I decided to take some sign language classes and teach him and the rest of my students how to sign. The result was amazing! Not only did the boy use the sign language in his everyday life and at school, the rest of the students grasped the concept like sponges and used it to communicate with him and each other. The students even taught their own parents how to sign. It was contagious! Learning sign language also helped the children immensely with the writing process, which is often difficult for first graders to initially learn.
This year, I have the same boy's brother, who had special needs, and I am trying to teach him sign language so he can communicate better with his brother. I also have a student whose mother is deaf. The boy is reluctant to learn sign language and use it with his mother. He seems embarrassed. I try my best to make signing fun and give the students a well-rounded education, but I do not have enough resources. With some sign language videos, software, and books hopefully all of the students can really get into studying and help both boys communicate with and be proud of using sign language with their families. I know the experience would be something they would remember for the rest of their lives. Hopefully, they will carry this knowledge and special opportunity with them through their adult years. This year I have 21 students. Last year, I had 31 students. My students from last year still use sign to this day. One of my girls said that when she grows up she wants to be a sign language teacher! These materials would allow me to teach this great language to my students with more excitement, deeper knowledge, and hands-on experiences they can visually see in action rather than me just standing in the front of the class and offering a new sign each day. These resources would greatly benefit and impact my students in a positive way by teaching them a new language, empathy, steps of the writing process, and helping families communicate. Thank you for your time and consideration!!
