Our class consists of four- students with moderate disabilities. The range of abilities is great. Some of the students are able to read, some are able to answer questions, some are able to calculate addition problems and still others are able to communicate their wants and needs.
They are a special group of teenagers!
Each bringing to the class a different joy and excitement. They are learning to meet their own needs as well as help their peers meet theirs. They are reaching goals that they have set for themselves.
Everyone who enters the classroom witnesses the intense will of these young people to "do their best". Most of the students come from poverty where there is little to no money to help them grow to their true potential.
My Project
We are creating a sensory room at our school. We are in need of light, sound and smell options to place in this space. These pieces will help students who have sensory processing disorders. The activity that these items provide will help my students calm. Once they calm, they are ready to begin instruction again.
Our sensory room will provide a positive sensory experience for the students.
The lights, sounds and smells will provide a variety of sensory activities for the students. They will meet a variety of needs for different students. The bubble floor lamp will provide a calming visual stimulation.
