This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This is a bright and active group of five and six-year-old children. They love to create and tell stories. They love to read and be read to. They are quickly learning to work together, which is a vital skill in our world. My children work in small groups and independently throughout the day. This helps them learn to focus and improve self-control issues. Small group activities that let us get up and move help our ADHD tendencies stay under control. We need real reasons to move and stretch.
We grow in all areas by practicing and playing together.
Writing throughout the day in science, social studies, math, and even in art helps us in so many ways. We get noisy, but we learn so much together. We need supplies to grow as readers, writers, and illustrators. We need to show the colors of our ideas. We need ways to be active and help us learn to control our ADHD tendencies. There is so much to learn.
My Project
My current kindergarten crew are sweet, kind and struggling! Very few had a preschool experience. Writing their names is a huge struggle. All social skills need daily practice. This whole “reading” thing is a mystery.
Readers need a large sight word bank to grow.
These basic words make up 90% of all future reading. Adults need to be able to see these basic words and know them automatically. Developing this automaticity starts here in kindergarten. This automaticity starts with reading these books as part of a read at home exchange. It starts with lots of in class reading. It starts with these sight word books. It all starts with your support.
With the requested blank books, my kindergarteners will have the chance to put these sight words to work. They will have the ability to write and illustrate stories. Automaticity of our sight words will grow as we share our stories.
