Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth grade teacher in a large pre-K-8 school. Most if not all of my students come from lower income families. Many of these children face poverty, violence and obscenities of life on a daily basis, that are well beyond what most of us could imagine.
I work in a school with a very high immigrant population where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Most of my students have come from South America and Puerto Rico looking for a better future, but they need the tools to make them successful. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics. Some of my students have very limited schooling in their own language but they have the strength to succeed with the appropriate support.
My Project
The use of books is a daily activity in my classroom, especially in the morning during share reading, silent reading, and read aloud activity. Reading books with sight words will help my students to continue learning how to read and at the same time, they will practice the same words daily several times throughout the day.
Eighty percent of my students do not have books at home, so they take books from the classroom and bring them back every day.
My classroom does not have the appropriate reading level books and my students are using what we have available. It is very difficult for most of them to read high-level books because they are still learning how to read in English and in their primary language. These books will not only benefit 25 students, but the books will benefit many students throughout the years.
