My Students

Nearly 600 students in grades 1-3, aged 5-9, attend our public primary school in southern Maine. The area is economically depressed, with many children depending on school breakfasts and lunches to supplement their diets. We are a designated Title I school.

Our school is moving towards individual and differentiated instruction.

Our population is very diverse. Student movement within the classroom to help focus their attention, thus increasing their learning, is crucial in today's classroom.

I have 20 smart, energetic second graders who deserve opportunities that will enrich their learning environment!

My Project

Some students struggle with reading no matter the situation. Since complete fluency with sight words is the foundation of literacy, a variety of techniques must be used to teach them. Repetition and practice are very important in making sight word recognition automatic. These phrases contain the first 100 words from the Fry Instant Word List, which represent 50 percent of all the words children encounter in elementary school reading.

Repeated reading of a few phrases per week gives students practice reading high-frequency words and developing fluency and general proficiency.

These phrases may be written on sentence strips, transparencies, or on a chart for use in a literacy center or small group instructional setting.
