I teach in a special education classroom known as the STARS room, that houses a diverse community of learners with a huge range of talents and abilities! The classroom is designed for K-2 students with moderate cognitive impairments, autism, and Down Syndrome. Our learners are constantly surprising us with their unique strengths and no two days are the same. They show endless curiosity and a love for learning and practicing concepts in fun and creative ways.
In addition to all of the incredible things these students can do, we also have some high needs and challenges in our classroom!
Learning and maintaining new concepts is especially difficult for my students, but, despite the difficulties they face, my outstanding group of kids continue to work hard and achieve to the best of their potential!
My Project
My classroom is full of unique learners who benefit from a variety of learning tools. A big focus in our classroom right now is on learning and identifying sight words. Games like the Zingo sight word game are an awesome way to develop social skills and practice turn taking all while making learning new words fun and engaging. Sight word puzzles offer students a chance to practice new words with more independence as the matching puzzle piece will serve as an aid to allow students to self correct if they have tried to match the wrong word.
When students are given multiple means to practice their skills, they are more likely to retain that knowledge.These tools will allow my students to have fun while practicing vital academic skills.
In addition, I have included some supplies to help keep me organized while planning fun and engaging ways to deliver content to my kids. I am eager to watch my students learn and grow using interactive and manipulative tools that I know they will enjoy. Thank you for supporting my STARS.
