Sight words or high frequency words make up a large majority of words in children's text. Sight words are critical component to beginning reading. These are important first words for children to recognize and recall as they read.
I teach kindergarten in Oklahoma.
The variety of learners in my classroom includes readers and non-readers. Despite their differences, they all deserve positive learning experiences. These children need a solid foundation as they journey to becoming independent readers.
My Project
I am requesting classroom sets of Short Books. Short Books concentrate on teaching children the most common words in the English language. The goal is to make these high frequency words so familiar, children automatically read them by "sight."
These first words are not easy to learn, however, because they carry little concrete meaning. These books will be used in whole group and small group settings with teacher instruction. Once children gain independence reading the books, they will be taken home to practice reading at home and then brought back to school to be kept in each child's personal book box that they read from independently while the teacher works with small groups of students.
Short Books are meant for students, to read, reread, take home to read to family, and come back to school as independent reading material.
In order to develop automatic understanding of sight words, children need many opportunities to practice and Short Books are designed to give children those opportunities.
