Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What an amazing group of six year old students I have this year! They come to school each day with a smile on their faces ready to learn and are so eager when given new opportunities. I teach first grade in an inner city, low income area. The majority of my students are English language learners and approximately 94% receive free or reduced lunch. It is such a challenge teaching in a low socioeconomic school because I often buy materials with my own money and it tends to be very costly.
My Project
I have a group of struggling readers who have not yet acquired early literacy skills. They are a very creative group of first graders who love to learn. However, in order for them to become adequate readers they need to know their sight words. They just need new strategies to learn them. I would love to get card stock/construction paper and markers in order for them to make their own set of sight word cards. They can keep them in their own bins and practice them daily during reading centers. Another fun ways to practice their words is with the use of the smelly color pencils and the mechanical pencils. Any six year old would love to use these amazing school supplies. It would definitely improve my students enthusiasm for learning.
