I teach fifth grade to a wonderful group of students in an awesome school! They enter our room every day wanting to learn and discover new things. They not only depend on me, but also each other to learn! Just like anyone else, they expect to come to a safe and comfortable classroom, feel allowed to take risks, discuss new ideas and develop friendships. We are the only district in the state of Missouri that doesn't have a racial majority.
My Project
My students need a new fresh carpet to learn and collaborate. My poor brown carpet that has been in my room for over ten years has been put to good use, but it is rather small and it's time for it to retire! We would use the area to have our morning meetings, small group work and even independent time! This will make life easier for them because ALL of my students can fit and MANY students will be able to collaborate in small groups.
I'm really looking forward to starting every morning coming together as a group to discuss expectations and the schedule for the day.
Students thrive when they know what is happening and know what's coming next. It's important for my students to know the objectives for the day. I also think it's imperative for my students to feel like they have a voice among their peers. Having a large carpet that brings them together as a community is a great way to implement these ideas.
