This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching English in an urban environment presents unique challenges on a daily basis. My school's demographics have changed over the ten years I have been here. We are now a predominantly Spanish-speaking student body, with arrivals from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Peru, Venezuela, Mexico and Guatemala filling our halls.

We need a large influx of Shakespeare here.

Exposure to his beauty, poetry and prose transcends any language barrier. It will take them to a time and place they have never known.

My Project

All too often working in an inner city high school presents a laundry list of problems, due primarily to a lack of funding. In the past when I have presented new books to my kids, they handle them so gingerly and reverently, even while enjoying their new smell. Things we take for granted are a gift to my kids.

As such, being able to read, discuss and share a poignant and dramatic tale as "The Merchant of Venice" would open a whole new world for them.

The characters, dialogue, setting and plot is relatable to the relevant, timeless theme of prejudice.
