We are a multicultural classroom. The majority of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. We have a large population of migrant students from various places. The largest group is students from Somalia. For some of our students, this is their first time going to school in America.
Many of our students are trauma-impacted, low-income students.
These students view school as their safe place and a place where they can be themselves. We have a very supportive community that is built mostly of refugees.
My Project
Being able to label plant and animal cells can be confusing for students, to make it fun and hands-on I like to use shrinky dink paper and have kids color the parts and label. We then make the cells into key chains. The students love this activity.
Most students have never seen a shrinky dink paper and get really excited to have something that they can keep.
I print a picture of a cell on to the paper and students look up diagrams of the cells to know how to color the cells with different colored permanent markers. After baking the cells students are allowed to keep these.
