Help me give my students an opportunity to practice a great vocational skill - Shredding! Students will use the Shredder to provide a valued service to their school community.
Can you imagine not knowing where your body is in space? Feeling like you are always itching, tingling, or lost? My students have severe autism and need sensory input to find their own bodies in space and learn appropriate movement skills.
Students in my class are active, funny, and intelligent.
They also happen to have severe autism.
These students face challenges on a daily basis, not only in learning academics, but in learning where their bodies are in space and how to control them. Sensory input is vital to students with autism. Whether it be sound, touch, taste, or smell, it can make or break that child's day. Providing ample sensory items and breaks helps with fine and gross motor for those who continue to have balance issues as well as dexterity problems. Sensory input helps students learn how to control their movements in a world in which they do not fit.
My Project
Students in our program need as many opportunities to learn meaningful vocational skills as possible. We will use the shredder to learn many valuable vocational skills. Shredding allows students to work for an extended period of time on a project.
They will learn to count sheets into groups for shredding, load and unload trash bags, take out shredding, and will do all this while providing the school with a valuable service.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their readiness for post-secondary achievement.
