Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title 1 school in a community that was hit hard by Hurricane Harvey. Some of our students lost everything in the flood waters. Not only did they lose possessions but some lost family members.
In the midst of hard times that my students have suffered, they come to school with smiles on their faces, ready to learn.
However this year I have noticed that the students are struggling with being able to focus on their learning as well as retaining the content. It would be an encouragement to them if they had items that they could manipulate so they can "see" the Math in progress.
My Project
My students need hands-on materials so they will be able to understand what happens to the numbers in each place value as they add, subtract, multiply and divide. These computations are the building blocks to higher levels of Math.
Hands-on materials will give my students a stronger understanding of place value which will then increase their knowledge in number sense.
I have worked with students in upper grades that still count on their fingers as they add and subtract. If I can solidify the understanding of place value in the 3rd grade, their success in Math will increase when they reach the upper grades.
