Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Being the 'little guys' on campus has its perks & pitfalls. On the bright side, everyone thinks you're cute & can't wait to help you. Conversely, many consider finger painting & playing house to be the extent of your capabilities. Pre-Kindergarten is so much more & we want everyone to know!
I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-olds motivated to learn about everything!
They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development.
The majority of my students have limited resources at home, so they begin school without the experiences often regarded as staples of childhood. They share a coloring book & box of crayons with several siblings & typically haven't used scissors or glue. What they do have are dedicated parents determined to find a way to fill in those gaps and that's where the Pre-K Program comes into play.
My Project
My students need 2 bulletin boards to display their work on our classroom doors, thematic accents for borders, and a white board to post reminders & requests for parents.
A bulletin board for each of our two classroom doors would provide a backdrop to display the surprising realities of Pre-K. We sort, describe, classify, predict, infer, invent, compose, estimate, count, order, compare, and contrast. We draw, cut, write, dictate, transcribe, recite poetry, copy & extend patterns, and create graphs.
Students are presented with new experiences in our classroom each day and they approach them with varying levels of curiosity and competence. We dispense guidance combined with encouragement and the children marvel at their own successes. They can't wait for Mommy and Daddy to view their latest accomplishments. Highlighting these milestones on our front doors will allow everyone to catch a glimpse of what really goes on in Pre-K!
Additionally, a white board stationed in front of our room will be utilized to post messages for parents/caregivers regarding weekly themes, upcoming events such as field trips or cooking activities, & schedule changes.
This year is the first step in the academic careers of my 36 young learners.
They are full of enthusiasm and strive to do their best. I believe that's worthy of recognition. While I'd like to brag about their achievements to the world, we'll begin closer to home by showing off what we're learning on our own front doors.
