My students are amazing. They are a diverse group of kids that come from the East, NY area of Brooklyn who come from families with a low income. Many of my students reside in shelters and require lots of love and support. My students are currently fully remote and learning through a virtual platform. The students in my class have a wide range of disabilities. Although they have disabilities, they try their best to not allow their disabilities hold them back from accomplishing their goals. The disabilities range from learning disabilities to emotional disturbance and even autism. They love hands on activities, and engaging projects that allow them to think outside the box.
Although my students have different learning needs than other students, they are no different than any other student.
They laugh, they cry, they struggle, they succeed. They are really a great group of kids that I honestly feel have been dealt a rough hand. All in all, they are mine. My students.
The students in my classroom are fully remote and are unable to socialize and share the way they have in the past. This school year for them is very unique and one that will be very memorable. As their mentor and teacher, my goal is to build their Social Emotional Learning at this crucial time because it is needed the most. I would love to engage them in ways that will open new opportunities for them to learn through ways they have not done so before.
One of those ways is spreading love, kindness, and appreciation through positive affirmations.
Encouraging kindness and resilience during this difficult time will help promote a positive environment in our virtual classroom and throughout the upcoming school years when they return. In our virtual classroom, we start with daily affirmations and we say kind words to our peers. By doing this, we are ensuring that our students have a positive mindset to prepare them for their lessons so they can achieve success.
This Cricut Maker will be used to allow students to design and share their positive affirmations as part of a community service project to promote social and emotional learning to bring change through small acts of kindness. Students will also receive personalized gifts from the teacher for excelling in this remote learning platform.
