I teach in a high poverty school. My students face many challenges in their home lives. Many face trauma on a constant basis, but when they come to school, my students are eager to learn! We are a tight-knit group and consider each other family. I refer to them as my kids. It is important to me to make those little connections with every single child. This group of kids is well-behaved, sweet, and they love to learn new things!
These students work hard every day, are eager to learn, are kind to each other, and we refer to our classroom as our "family." We are lucky to have the opportunity to spend our time together!
We have a lot of fun together and actively engage in the learning process together through high quality literature and math lessons, as well as exciting room transformation projects. We love learning and trying new things!
My Project
Gratitude is not an easy thing to understand. It can be especially difficult for children to understand. We all have so much to be grateful for, but sometimes it's not always easy to see. Many of my students come from homes of trauma and stress and they have the mindset that things aren't going to get better. In my class, we read books about gratitude, have class discussions, and write daily in gratitude journals. We talk every day about all of the great things happening, thus hopefully improving their emotional and social well-being.
Studies show that children who practice grateful thinking lead happier lives, have better attitudes at home and school, and have better relationships with those around them.
It is never too early to instill the values of gratitude in young children.
One way to install gratitude is by writing notes of thanks to those that care for us. I am requesting note cards, postcards, and art supplies for students to continue the life-long lesson of gratitude at school. Students will be able to write notes to those they are thankful for. By doing this, not only will they fill the hearts of those they are writing to, but they will also fill their own. The shelf organizer will help us keep our supplies accessible and organized.
