This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Paul "Bear Bryant said, "It’s not the will to win that matters—everyone has that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters." Believe me, gifted students are competitive and have that will.
I teach fifty-five 4th grade students from fifteen area schools who have been identified as gifted.
While most of the schools they attend are Title I schools, there is no funding for gifted education. Our state education systems have been tremendously hurt by the economic turndown. Any materials we get are purchased from our own pocket, thus no books, no equipment, and no materials.
My Project
I have found that when there is a little friendly competition involved, my students will really pay attention and study. There is a game I like to play with my students called "Showdown." When we are reviewing a topic, I place the students into small groups and they compete to get correct answers - first within their team and then against other teams. Any time we play this game - and yes, they consider it play, they really perk up and are alert.
Presently, we use paper and pencil which can be unwieldy and just really does not work as well as it could.
Can you imagine the excitement my students will have when they see new equipment to make their "Showdown" game more exciting?
Please help us so my students can continue to prepare for their future and keep up their competitive edge.
