This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I feel so fortunate to be able to "walk in my purpose" every day! Teaching my students brings an indescribable joy. These unique kids and I have adopted the motto, "Show You Know!" Since the school year is coming to an end, my incredible students have even talked to the future third graders about what to expect with third-grade math, especially those open-ended responses. I know my future third-grade mathematicians will be eager to show all they know next year.
My current and future students live in a neighborhood that may be tough; however, these students are resilient and prove it every day they come to school ready to learn.
We have created a safe environment in our classroom to help students be risk-takers and problem solvers in math. Helping these students meet their personal and academic goals in math is what I strive towards every day I come to work.
My Project
Many of my students have stated that math is their favorite subject. In reality, they usually love solving equations but have had a difficult time showing and explaining how they solved the problem. Providing these and future students with math manipulatives, which will be used during independent math centers and Guided Math groups, will not only provide them with opportunities to practice mathematical problems, they will also be able to learn how to explain and defend their reasoning.
The fear of being wrong can be paralyzing for some of my students.
Without the tools and practice, they will develop a comfort with never asking "why" or "how" in math. As a teacher, I have worked hard to provide students with a safe environment to take risks. We are fortunate to have an Interactive Smartboard and Chromebooks; however, the lack of hands-on materials prevents my students from working independently or in a small group effectively.
Fractions, geometry, place value, area, and perimeter are some of the big hot topics in third grade. Providing my students with manipulatives will allow them the opportunity and time to master these concepts for future success. I tell my students all the time, "Once you know it, you can show it!"
