My Special Education students come from an inner city and are often subjected to violence, trauma and poverty in their day-to-day lives. This, added to a diagnosis of a disability, puts them at a distinct disadvantage when considering the necessary factors for academic success.
To address my students' individual learning needs, I introduce each math skill through interactive notebooks, hands-on materials and multimodality teaching.
I find that this encourages student engagement, an increased willingness to participate, and keeps my students inspired.
By providing the basic necessities for learning as well as creating a learning environment where creativity and artistic expression are encouraged, I am able to better address each student's unique learning style.
My Project
Through utilizing the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach in my classroom, whereby I present material through visual, auditory and tactile means and allow students to express understanding through these means, I see meaningful and successful learning take place.
Visual expression of knowledge through interactive notebooks is one way for students to grasp and retain concepts.
Art supplies, such as colored pencils, markers, colored paper, and glue are needed in order to create these notebooks. Students then refer to these notebooks throughout the year, use them as study guides for MCAS, and bring them to math class in subsequent grades.
