Imagine teaching at a school where over 90% of your students qualify for free and reduced meals and come from the poorest neighborhoods in your school district. Better yet, imagine you are one of these students. Despite this, I have a class full of eager learners who work hard everyday.
Our class is compromised of 20 African American, Asian, and Hispanic students.
We work hard everyday to overcome the obstacles that accompany the home lives they have. Although we take each student's situation into consideration, we do not make excuses. We work hard to build structure, routine, and high expectations. By the end of year, these students are able to achieve more than most could imagine.
My students need white boards, markers, erasers, and study carrels to replace the well loved and well used materials we currently have. In order to monitor student progress, some type of assessment is usually required daily. Assessment does not always mean "test" however. Very frequently, we play various games with the white boards, markers and erasers we have. This helps me to see how individual students are doing while making learning fun and exciting. Each student absolutely loves having these materials at his or her disposal. It is nice to take a break from the usual paper and pencil activities required by the curriculum. For the times when a test is necessary however, we need the study carrels to give the students the privacy they need to be able to concentrate and "show what they know".
The current resources we have are 6 years old.
This means that over one hundred students have used and benefited from them. As a result, they are well loved and well used. Although some of the resources still have some life left in them, most are dirty, damaged or no longer able to be used. Replacing these valuable resources will allow another 6 or more years worth of students to enjoy learning.
