My students need financial literacy books and games, such as Lily Learns About Wants and Needs, and Loose Change, to have hands-on methods to learn about real-world math.
As a teacher at a low-income/high-poverty school, I see students from all walks of life. Our school has approximately 80% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunches based on their family income and size.
The students come to school, often, with no book bag or coat, holes in their shoes, pants, shirts; not knowing when they'll have a full, healthy meal again if it's not at school.
Some students do not have clean, weather-appropriate clothes at home. Some students don't know where their next warm meal is coming from. Some students are not sure where they will be sleeping that night.
School is their safe space, where they know adults want them to succeed. To help bridge this gap, we supplement what their families can provide.
My Project
My students face various obstacles daily because of their disabilities and socio-economic status. Their disabilities require varied methods of instruction to learn academic concepts, such as math, ELA, science, and social studies.
Money is a difficult topic for all students to learn; however, it is a life skill that my students need to be taught explicitly.
With books about saving, spending, wants and needs, my students will be able to engage with money directly through the characters in the books. To learn through experience, my students need the games requested to process and comprehend the importance of and process of making, saving, and spending money.
