Our school resides in a rural area with a majority low socio-economic population of approximately four hundred and fifty students. We have more non-traditional families (single parents, grandparents) than traditional and a wide range of ability levels. Many families at our school have found or will find themselves in a state of homelessness during the elementary years. For some families we are a revolving door often losing students and then getting them back through the year. In addition, we have several local military bases near here that support our students and their families.
Although poverty is rampant, we are always looking for ways to provide our students with the tools that they need and deserve to be successful learners.
We work as a TEAM to help build each other up and share our strengths, ideas and discoveries. I am so excited to start this year with 18 motivated students who are convinced that 4th grade is going to be their best year ever! We've got the attitude and classroom culture, now we are asking for a little help in providing those resources.
My Project
I am requesting help to fund 2 iPads with protective cases. Although there are an endless variety of apps out there to assist student learning, I have found several that will take academic Show and Tell to a new level. These apps act like interactive whiteboards where students can write out a problem and then record themselves in audio as they work through to solve it. In addition, they can insert photographs, files, and even short green screen movies they create. These student created files can then be placed on our class site for others to see! Essentially they will be teaching others; their peers, absent students, and parents. And as every educator knows, teaching someone else is one of the best ways to learn and retain information. But the best part, and the one that makes it so valuable to a student without technology is, it is FUN!!!

Showing and Telling through the use of modern technology and cool apps is a powerful venue for the creative process, verbalization of different skills and concepts and deepening vocabulary and understanding.
