This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Most of my students' mathematical skills are not at grade level and many are one to two years behind academically. Through their hard work students are able to bridge the academic gap; our school boasts a graduations rate of 93%.
A variety of learning methods must be used to keep students interested.
My students are competitive, whether working with a group or individually; they want to win! It's great seeing them be middle schoolers, as many of my students have responsibilities at home on par with the expectations of some adults.
My Project
Students are allowed to work in pairs or groups of four to complete classwork. The larger dry erase boards will provide the space needed by all members of the group to contribute ideas on problem-solving. Students enjoy using the dry erase boards because it gives them a break from using notebook paper. Once the problem has been checked for correction, students often transfer the information to their personal binder.
Students learn best from each other; the dry erase boards will provide an opportunity for students to show and share their thought process with their group when solving mathematical problems.
I encourage my students to participate in class. Whether it's a job well done or a great try for correct or incorrect answers, involvement is key to learning. The treasure pencils will be given to students during these times to thank them for contributing to the classroom learning environment.
