When someone asks where I teach, I proudly exclaim the name of my school and the response I always get is, "Oh, that is a wonderful school!" I have to agree and have called it home for the last fifteen years. I'm so lucky to be a part of this school community. It is an older campus-style school that is tucked away in a neighborhood, which makes it easy to miss; however, I and my local community consider it to be our hidden gem. What makes us so great? Our student population is very diverse. We have a variety of economic backgrounds, over 50 countries represented, and many students receive free and reduced-cost breakfast and lunch. In addition, we have students who receive weekly food bags and school supplies from caring teachers and community members.
Our students' willingness to learn, our sense of community, and school pride is what holds us together and keeps us going.
Students and teachers at my school always have a smile on their face and make it a wonderful place to be!
My Project
I would like to teach my students how to manage money, collaborate and communicate with their peers, and be a positive influence on our future economy by starting a mock mini-economy in my classroom. I will begin the unit by teaching economic terminology and giving them experiences they can connect to. We will read Lemonade War and participate in literature circles at our laminate table. This book does an excellent job explaining economic terms in kid friendly language.
Next, students will be asked to conduct research, create, market and sell an innovative product that would be appealing to their classmates and make daily tasks easier.
After they have created a product, they will design a dazzling, and creative poster that they will hang from their storefront, the laminate table. They will also use this table to conduct business and display their products. They will buy and sell their goods for faux money.
Students will learn the importance of marketing their products. They will accomplish this by printing business cards to distribute and producing commercials for their customers to view. While shopping and selling, students will solve real-life math problems. They will also get to experience bartering, saving, debt, and credit. Students will learn how to change prices to reflect the needs of supply and demand, create sales and promotional opportunities to grow a larger profit. Please help me bring this exciting activity to my students!
