This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I'm an 11th and 12th grade ELA teacher in a public school in the heart of the Mississippi Delta.
Our school is a Title I school, with 100% of the student body receiving free lunch.
Despite the conditions of poverty in which many of my students live, they are determined to receive a quality education and become successful. They are great dreamers and thinkers who want nothing more than to go out into the world and make a difference. They simply need a little assistance acquiring the necessary supplies!
My Project
Often times we hear students say that most of the things they needed to know about life school did not teach them. They learn the English, math, and science skills, but they don't learn the "real life" skills. I want to give them all the skills necessary to lead a prosperous life. My students need financial literacy books, receipt books, cash box and coin wrappers to help them become financially literate.
I believe that teaching our students how to take care of themselves is of the utmost importance.
They need to be able to balance budgets, understand why paying bills late is bad for them, and file their own taxes. Knowing how to complete these tasks along with completing their traditional educational courses will help the students to become prosperous, contributing members of our society.
