My students need iPads to learn about financial literacy in a fun and engaging way using apps such as Unleash the Loot! Saving Spree, and P2K Money.

Students at my school love to learn, and can acquire so much more knowledge if only we had the resources. Some of these students are described as limited English students, delinquent, migratory students, or students with disabilities. The total enrollment is approximately 630 students. The ethnic composition is comprised of approximately 62% Black, 11% White, 20% Hispanic, .2% American Indian, 3% Asian, and 3% two or more races. In this school, 64.5% of the students are eligible for the free or reduced meals program.
In a school that is categorized as a Title I school and deemed a high poverty school, we need to equip students with the skills and knowledge that allow them to be savvy consumers and competent managers of their own finances in the future.
Besides striving to achieve proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards, we must also strive to teach our students financial literacy and responsibility.
My students need a ipad. In today's complicated economic times, parent and educators should be advocating for the importance of instilling financial literacy and wisdom in young children to prevent fiscal irresponsibility.
As a teacher in a Title I elementary school, it is more important than ever to teach our youth how to build a foundation in savings, investing, sharing, and spending in moderation.
My goal is to increase financial literacy for K-5 students using fun and engaging apps that allow them to understand the importance of fiscal responsibility so that they will grow up to be savvy consumers and competent managers of their own finances. The "Unleash the Loot!" app is a game that allows students to rescue their favorite endangered animal while learning financial literacy along the way. Using a budget, students can buy an animal food, shelter and toys to play with before the animal is released back into the wild. Students develop a relationship with the animal, which gives them an incentive to budget wisely and reach their goal. The "P2K" app teaches children to keep track of income like an allowance or payments for doing chores. It also offers motivational features such as the ability to include photos of wish list items and an option to view a history of purchases and decide whether they were worth the cost or not. Finally, "Saving Spree" teaches students how to save for short term goals, make frugal decisions, donate a portion of their savings, and invest money for future expenses.
As important as reading, math, social studies and science are, I think today more than ever financial literacy has to be part of that.
