As a teacher in a Title 1 school in SE TX, I have many students who are from low-income homes and are marked "at risk for not graduating". Even though the students do not have the same life experiences as other kids their age, I strive to make their learning meaningful and fun so they will enjoy school.
My students are creative, fun, inquisitive, and purposeful.
Many of my students are being raised by a single parent or a grandparent, are on our "free or reduced lunch" plan at school. Last year my students were faced with the devastation of Hurricane Harvey which altered their living situations, and then a tragic school shooting, which has affected everyone in our small community. They come to me reading below grade level, and this is a challenge that keeps them from believing they can be more. I always hope to help them see the potential they have to grow academically and socially. By keeping them engaged in learning I am helping them want to stay in school and helping them believe they can be successful in what they dream or desire.
My Project
I would love to use an iPad in my classroom because it will greatly enhance learning through the use of technology necessary for my students. I will not only be able create anchor charts using the Apple pencil and then project them on to our smart board, but the students will also be able to use the iPad during literacy stations.
The iPad will help my struggling readers who are below grade level, as well as my group of ESL learners who are struggling with language acquisition.
I have found that the children's apps that are available have tools that are built into the system that can help with cognitive learning deficiencies. (ie. speak auto-text, white on black, voice over, and voice recognition technology). I believe that the IPad's design will make it easy for my students to navigate, therefore optimizing the learning experience of all my students no matter their level or background.
All donations made to our classroom will be greatly appreciated and used daily to promote student growth and success as well as make school an enjoyable place for them!
