My fourth grade students are from the island of Kauai and come from diverse backgrounds. We are not a Title 1 school and live in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, therefore students have limited access to the world around them. Their inability to travel off-island makes it difficult for them to gain valuable experiences. I have 23 energetic students in my classroom. They are full of energy and are always thirsty to learn new things and ideas.
My Project
I am working to provide 10 Chromebooks to the twenty-three students in my class. The use of Chromebooks is used daily, across multiple subject areas, such as Math, Science, and Language Arts. At KES we believe every student is an “at-risk” student; at risk of not meeting their potential. Each child comes to us in August with a year’s worth of growth or more ahead of them. We have nine months to instruct, support and nurture all students to their minimum of a year’s worth of growth. We have found and have implemented strategies in our school that produce more than a year’s growth. In fact, we have students making catch up growth and others making stretch growth every day in our classrooms. The foundation for this student growth is differentiation. Differentiation occurs when a teacher identifies individual student needs and works to meet those needs. One of our key tools to differentiate for students is the use of Chromebooks. They allow teachers to share individualized lessons quickly, give students immediate feedback on their work, offer activities for collaboration with other students and provide a platform for creativity and self-motivation. We use it for technology applications such as iReady, Google Classroom, Typing Club, Epic, and Kahoot. In addition to that, students will be able to learn 21st Century skills they will need for the future.
Please partner with us to get each and every one of our students to grow and meet their potential.
