Help me give my students the kind of books that will lure them in and hook them into a lifetime of reading.
I'm requesting high interest, hardback books, so I always have something great to lend out.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My biggest passion is that my students would grow to love reading and choose it on their own. Even if my dream for them doesn't come true, I still want to prepare them for the reading they will encounter in college. I can't do that without plenty of good books. Our school's library is well stocked, but I need to have books in my classroom to hand to students at any time the need arises.
"I loved the reading part because it showed that I don't need a reason to read, I can read for myself." - Ivy
I love this quote from one of my past students. She truly developed a passion for reading!
When I do reading surveys at the start of my class, the majority of my students report that they've never read a book on their own, and they weren't read to as children. They are inner city kids where the majority reads 4 to 6 years below grade level. They need good, high interest books to help them become life long readers!
My Project
Reluctant readers struggle with picking a book from the library. They worry about the length and often just go for the shortest pick. The most reluctant readers often like the books that I give them in my classroom during our independent reading time. I'm specifically trying to move them away from some of the easiest books, and challenge them to books that are a little more challenging. The Boys in the Boat is a great example of a book that students probably wouldn't chose on their own, but will love once they get into the stories in it.
I've seen students caught up in the story and ask for the same book again the next day - students that I never thought would read, are actually reading.
I want to fill my classroom shelves with great books that hook my readers.
